Short Line Data Systems ROCS Update – September 2009 Website: www.sdsrocs.com And you can read Steve’s blog at www.railresource.com Greetings – A little procrastination and half of the month is gone. I really meant to write this before Labor Day, but I guess I got a little bit distracted. We have been busy, with a ROCSTM Version 12 upgrade, a new HOSSTM customer, and continued upgrades to HOSS for all of our other users. We had a great time at the ASLRRA Central/Pacific Regional meeting in Seattle, and we have a couple of more trips on our schedule for the year. So much for the above, let’s get going with this update. ROCS Version 12 We have been continuing with the upgrading of our users to the latest version of the classic ROCS system. Our most recent upgrade has been at the Housatonic Railroad, who is our oldest customer. The upgrade went well. Our next road to upgrade will be the Maine Eastern, and we will probably follow that with the Seminole Gulf and Bay Colony Railroads. With the implementation of the new UMLER system, we are continuing with our development of the new parts of ROCS that are needed to interface with the new system. We hope to have it ready to test in a couple of weeks, followed by deployment of the new system to our users before the end of the year. HOSS We have been extremely busy with the HOSS system. A lot of this has come from user requests, as well as input from the FRA. We are now distributing Version 1E, which cleaned up a number of rule interpretations that were a question when the laws went into effect. This version also introduces a way to enter an entire crew’s work day at once if they have the same work details. We have also added three new reports to the system, as well as an Excel export of daily work data. We are happy to announce the New York, Susquehanna, & Western Railway as a new customer for HOSS,. The NYS&W is a neighbor of the M&E in New Jersey, and we are proud to welcome them into the SDS family. Travel, Travel, Travel We had a great time at the ASLRRA Central/Pacific Regional meeting in August. Seattle is a beautiful city, and the meeting program was absolutely first rate. If you can attend the Eastern Region meeting October 11-13, please do. You have the opportunity to attend a two day training session on the Hours of Service Laws, or you can attend the regular session, which will cover many of the issues that are affecting our industry today. Another feature of the meeting is a tabletop exhibit area, where the meeting event sponsors have the opportunity to display their wares to the meeting attendees. (We will have a table at the two remaining Regional meetings, as we did in Seattle.) If you can’t make the Indianapolis meeting, the Southern Region meeting will be in Panama City, FL November 8-10. Well, that is all for now. We will be back in a couple of weeks to update you with the latest SDS news (maybe before Indianapolis, but most likely right after). Stay safe, Steven Friedland President |
