Short Line Data Systems ROCS Update – March 2004

Website: www.sdsrocs.com

Greetings –

It finally looks like winter has started to break here in New Jersey, and we have been busy working on the POTB’s system, continuing the rollout of Version 8, and some new features that will be available soon.  We are also preparing for the ASLRRA Annual Meeting and Exposition in St. Louis in April which we will both exhibiting and speaking at.

Version 8

We rolled Version 8 out to the MERR and CLNA last month, and the system continues to perform well without any real issues causing problems.  Our plans are to upgrade the SRNJ and HRRC this month, with the ADBF following shortly thereafter.

New Features

With the rollout of Version 8 and the installation at the POTB, we have been busy with the release version of ROCS, but we haven’t stopped working on some new features for the system.

We have added a feature to allow the user to add/edit a waybill for a manually added car to the database.  This is particularly useful for inbound waybills that are faxed to the user railroad, and no EDI is received for the car.

We have also added an expanded movement record for cars to the system.  This allows the user to add “extra” movements for cars.  For example, if the user had a car that would be placed and then moved in and out of the plant multiple times, then a record can be created for each time the car is moved, if the user desires.

A new feature on the BrakeCheck screen is a button to allow a user to request a new UMLER record download for a car.  This is useful if the user knows that a car has been air tested, and needs to update the UMLER record in ROCS.  We have also added a similar button on the Car Rating screen for Car Hire rate requests.

Another project currently under development is an off line movement history trace.  We have just started working on this, and our intent is to have a system where a user can retrieve all available movement records for a car.  It will be a modification of the existing off line trace system, and will probably be available in a month or so.

We will probably be making an announcement next month about a new addition to our Car Hire system that will be a major step forward for ROCS, so stay tuned.

ASLRRA Annual Meeting

We are currently getting ready for the ASLRRA Annual Meeting and Exhibition on April 21-23.  This is the top show and meeting for Short Lines, both in content and contacts, and we strongly suggest that if you are not considering going to St. Louis, please reconsider your decision.

That is all for now, next month we will have more details about the upcoming new features, and more details about our booth in St. Louis.

Take care,

Steven Friedland
