Short Line Data Systems ROCS Update – July 2009

Greetings –

We are finally starting to dry out here in New Jersey, following a month of June with 29 days of rain.  The mushrooms were growing on the lawns as much as the grass and things were starting to sink into the ground just a bit.  We have been very busy with the HOSSTM, our Hours Of Service System, and we already have two customers for the system.  The distribution of Version 12 of the venerable ROCSTM system has begun, and we will be continuing with the distribution one or two more upgrades this month.  Finally we will be on the road again starting on Tuesday for an extended trip.

HOSS

It is our pleasure to announce that the first two customers for the HOSS are The Red River Valley & Western Railroad and the Ellis & Eastern Company of South Dakota.  Both railroads have had the HOSS installed in the last couple of days, and they will be receiving regular updates of their systems as the interpretations of the Hours of Service Laws are finalized by the FRA.  We are also adding new features to the system on a daily basis, including exports for other systems like payroll systems, and new reports.  We will be announcing other new customers soon, and if you are interested in the system, we can arrange an online demonstration, and when the system is purchased, we can install the system the same or next day.

ROCS Version 12

We successfully upgraded the East Erie Commercial Railroad to the latest version of the venerable ROCS system last month.  The upgrade went in with no issues, and we are going to continue with the upgrades to current users with the Texas Central Business Lines next week, and the Maine Eastern Railroad the week after.  The plan is to continue at the pace of a couple of railroads each month for the next couple of months.   For those of you who haven’t been paying attention to the changes in Version 12, the biggest improvement in the system has been to the processing speed, where we have seen improvements in the range of 500% -700%, which is a major improvement.  We have also made some changes to the reports in the system, and added a number of features to the car hire system.

On the Road Again

We are going to be on the road again this week, with our trip to the California Short Line Railroad Association meeting in San Diego and to the Texas Central Business Lines in Texas.  We will be travelling July 14-19, with flying days on the 14th, 17th, and 19th.  Please remember the time difference when calling, please.

We will also be on the road August 14-28, for a trip to the ASLRRA Central/Pacific Regional meeting in Seattle, and for a vacation following the meeting.  We’ll have more details on this trip in next month’s update.

Happy Birthday to Us

With the month of July comes the anniversary of the incorporation of SDS, and this year is a bit special.  We are now ten years old, something that I had hoped would happen, but as with any new project, you can never be quite sure.   It has been a very interesting time over these years, and we have been very fortunate to meet a number of you, and have had the opportunity to visit your properties all over the country.  I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank all of our customers for their support (and patience), and if the first ten years are any example, the next ten years should be very exciting.

Well, that is all for now.  I’m going to keep this update short, and we’ll be back in August with an update before the ASLRRA meeting.

Stay safe,

Steven Friedland

President
