Short Line Data Systems Inc. ROCS Update – December 2005

Website: www.sdsrocs.com

Season’s Greetings –

December already?  Time flying is an understatement.  As we move into the end of the year, we will take a look back at where we’ve been, and where we are going in the new year.  With over 50,000 miles under our belts it’s been a very busy time, but despite our time on the road, our products have been continuously improved, and we are excited about the changes in store for the classic ROCS system, ROCSMobile, and ROCSDispatch in 2006.

Where I’ve Been

As has become tradition, here is the list of everyplace I’ve been in 2005.  One thing to remember is that for the most part, the travel was done in two four month stretches, as I had to take two months at home when Rob was born, and there was an eight week break in traveling in August and most of September.  So here’s the list…

Louisville, KY and southern Indiana

Washington DC (4 times)

Anaheim, CA

Roanoke, VA

Pasco, WA (2 times)

San Diego, CA

Las Vegas, NV (2 times)

Pueblo, CO

Atlanta, GA

Detroit, MI and Windsor, ON

Orlando, FL

Pittsburgh, PA

Cary, NC (2 times)

Erie, PA (2 times)

All told, it was probably 45-55 (you quickly lose count) flights through places like Cincinnati, Houston, Seattle, and Atlanta; through time, air traffic, and weather delays, and more airplane and airport food that I would like to admit having.

ROCS

Progress has been made with the NexPath communications system.  We have finished writing most of the transfer formats, and are just about ready to start data testing some of the messages in the next couple of days.  We have been testing an automatic data reception system for the last couple of weeks, and so far the results are promising.  The system automatically downloads data from your Railinc mailbox at scheduled times, and imports the downloaded information to the database while you continue to do your work without interruption.  The download events can be scheduled to run whenever the user wants, or as many times throughout the day that the user requires.  We have been downloading data three times a day at the M&E, and we are finding that this has been sufficient for our needs at the moment.

ROCSDispatch

We have been very busy with ROCSDispatch, and we are happy to announce that the system is now ready for use with railroads that use the GCOR rulebook.  The features of the GCOR system are the same as the NORAC system, with the necessary changes made to accommodate the different forms of the GCOR rules.

We have also added some new features to the main dispatch screen.  The user can now issue train movement permission, record stations passed, record switch position, and give foul time right from the main screen.  This speeds up data entry, and increases accuracy.

We are in the process of finalizing arrangements for the first customer NORAC dispatch system, and we will make the announcement as soon as the deal is done.  We would be happy to arrange a demonstration of either the GCOR or NORAC systems, just give us a call and we can set up a time for an online demo.

Well, that’s about all for now.  We wish everyone the best during the holiday season, and hope for the best in the new year.

Stay safe,

Steven Friedland

President
