Short Line Data Systems ROCS Update – May 2007

Website: www.sdsrocs.com

Greetings:

The ASLRRA Annual Meeting has come and passed, and from all perspectives it was a great success.  We had a lot of good traffic at our booth, and it we also made a couple of new friends.  Now that everything is over we have been able to get back to work on the ROCS family of products, and we have a number of new features on the horizon.  Well, let’s get going on the news.

ASLRRA Baltimore

As we stated above, the ASLRRA Annual convention was a great success (personal bias aside!).  Thank you to all who made the event possible, from the ASLRRA staff to the planning committee, to a great group of dedicated volunteers who put in many, many, hours to execute a very complex and full schedule.  Congratulations to Ellen Oblow from the Gulf & Ohio, the winner of our booth prize, a Nikon Coolpix digital camera.  We were also proud to sponsor the exhibit hall prizes for the convention, and congratulate those winners.  As always, it was good seeing everyone and it was a pleasure showing off our wares, and our newest product, TRACCURATE, our AEI reading system.  We look forward to next year’s conference in San Antonio May 4-6, and best wishes to next year’s meeting chairperson Judy Petry, who has a large and exciting task ahead of her for the next year.

Customer News

We have been progressing with the setup of ROCSDispatch for the SLRG, and should have the system installed at the A&M in a week or so.

Current customer Carolina Coastal (CLNA) has decided to expand its installation for its service expansion in North Carolina, and we will be installing the system at its offices late in June.

Current customer US Rail Partners has decided to add a ROCS and ROCSDispatch installation for its new line in Washington State.  We anticipate installing the system mid to late June.

ROCS V10 Upgrades

We have been continuing the incremental upgrades of V10 over the last few weeks.  What this has been is going back and looking at the code of ROCS, some of which is approaching eight years old, and seeing if there is something that we could do better today than we did back then.  We have been concentrating on the inbound EDI processing, and have added a couple of items that have improved both performance and speed.

We have also been continuing with checking out Office 2007, and the SRNJ has moved their ROCS installation over to a Vista/Office 2007 computer.  Having the second user using the combination has helped us to identify some potential issues, which we have dealing with as they encountered.

ROCSDispatch

We are also looking at the code of ROCSDispatch for improvements, and have already identified a couple of areas that will improve performance is a couple of areas.  We are also continuing with GPS integration, and spoke with a couple of providers in Baltimore about using GPS with ROCSDispatch.

PET ROCS

The season is starting up in Maine this week, and we have been continuing to add new features as time has allowed.  The first new feature that has already been added is automatic voucher printing with tickets.  We will be using the vouchers for dining car purchases in Maine, and the vouchers will be adapted for other uses, such as hotels and museums.  Next up will be onboard sale tickets, which will replace tickets that we have had printed at a print shop in the past, and gift shop sales inventory, which is something that a number of potential users have requested.

Well, that is all for now.  We have a bunch of things to work on, and we’ll be back next month with updates on where we are.

Stay safe,

Steven Friedland

President
